Active Matter Game Modes Compared by Gear Loss Risk
Open Raids, Isolated Raids, Nexus Battles, Unstable Zone and Hired Ops — what each mode is, how much PvP it exposes you to, and whether you lose your gear.

Pick a mode in one line
Ask one question: if this round goes badly, do I lose anything?
| Mode | What it is | Other players | Gear at risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open Raid | Extraction PvPvE | Yes | Yes |
| Isolated Raid | PvE only, solo or co-op | No | Depends on raid rules |
| Nexus Battle | Competitive PvP | Yes | No |
| Unstable Zone | Battle royale style | Yes | What you find can come out |
| Hired Ops | Team deathmatch practice | Yes | No |
Which gives you the answer directly: if you can’t afford to lose gear, play Isolated Raids or Nexus Battles. If you want to earn, play Open Raids. If you just want to practise shooting, play Hired Ops.
The two raid types: Open and Isolated
The official FAQ is clear that the main mode is extraction raids, with separate dedicated PvP and PvE modes. A later update split raids into Open and Isolated, where Isolated contains no other player squads and carries no run limit.
Open Raid is the standard run: AI, anomalies and real squads all present. Highest payout, and the fastest way to lose a day of progress in one round.
Isolated Raid removes other players entirely. It isn’t an easy mode so much as a repeatable training ground — learn maps, test weapons, farm contracts.
Key point: Not every map works in both raid types. The official FAQ states that some locations are built only for PvPvE, some only for PvP, and some only for PvE. Switching mode switches your available map pool.
The two places to go if you just want to fight
Nexus Battle is the competitive mode built around the Nexus. It strips out the loot-and-extract pressure and leaves teamwork, positioning and gunfights. If you want to drill coordination without betting your stash, this is the direct route.
Hired Ops is a team deathmatch-style practice mode: you earn and spend points inside the match and never touch your stash. Players who tested it treat it as a warm-up before real raids.
Both share one property: losing costs you the round, not your inventory.
Unstable Zone is a different tempo
Unstable Zone is faster, battle-royale shaped, with the zone contracting or collapsing. The difference from most BRs is that what you pick up inside can come back with you, so it feeds the main progression rather than being a side activity.
The trade-off is that it demands more situational reading. You are watching the circle and dealing with anomalies and AI at the same time.
Choosing by who you are
| You are | Start with | Why | Then move to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brand new | Isolated Raid | Learn maps and AI behaviour with zero PvP pressure | Open Raid |
| Solo player | Isolated Raid | Gaijin confirms solo is supported | Solo-queue Open Raids |
| Duo or trio | Co-op Isolated Raid | Practise comms and role splits | Open Raid, Nexus Battle |
| PvP only | Nexus Battle, Hired Ops | No gear loss | Open Raid |
| Progression focused | Open Raid | Best loot and contract payout | — |
| Battle royale fan | Unstable Zone | Fast, and the loot carries out | — |
Squads and matchmaking
Matchmaking covers Solo, Duo, Trio and full Squad, with autofill available. Crossplay runs on three separate queues — your platform only, consoles only, or any platform — and you must select or confirm your choice in settings.
Isolated Raids explicitly support crossplay co-op. Cross-platform fighting in Open Raids requires consent from both sides. The full rules are on the crossplay page.
Things people mix up
Are Hired Ops and Unstable Zone official names?
Those two names come mainly from player testing and media coverage; official announcements use them rarely. What official posts confirm is that raids split into Open and Isolated, plus the existence of dedicated PvP and PvE modes.
Can I see all content without fighting players?
Not entirely. Some maps are PvPvE only, and Gaijin has no plans to open them to Isolated Raids. But you can push progression, farm contracts and learn maps in Isolated Raids and only enter Open Raids selectively.
Why does the map pool change with the mode?
Gaijin explained that some maps simply are not suited to certain modes. They plan to keep expanding explorable areas, but not by forcing modes like Unstable Zone into Isolated Raids.
